Pacific Herring Spawning and Fishery Update week of December 22, 2014

Spawning Update:
To date CDFW staff have documented four spawn events for the 2014-15 Pacific herring spawning season. The first being mid-October and the most recent occurred earlier this week in Richardson Bay, near Sausalito.

This event brought in many sea lions, harbor seals, gulls, cormorants and pelicans, always a sign that herring are likely spawning nearby.  Most of the spawning occurred in the Sausalito Anchorage area with some intertidal spawn detected primarily around Peninsula Point.

Fishery Update:
The Herring Eggs on Kelp fishery opened December 1, 2014 with a quota of 19.7 tons but no permits are currently active.  The gill net fishery is set to open on January 1, 2015 at 5:00pm with a quota of 2,302 tons. To date no recreational fishing activity has been observed or reported.
