Calm Before the Spawn

San Francisco Bay was relatively quiet this week. No new herring spawns were reported or detected during spawn surveys. There was some concentrated bird and marine mammal activity between the Golden Gate Bridge and Racoon Straight, but based on our observations they were likely feeding on Northern anchovy. The CDFW research vessel Triakis did catch a large sample of herring in the North Bay which showed “ripening fish.” A spawn will likely occur during the coming holiday week so stayed tuned as we roll into the new year. Happy Holidays!

Herring Have Arrived

The first herring of the 2016-17 season have finally arrived to San Francisco Bay. A spawn was first reported on Tuesday this week in Richardson Bay near Sausalito. A second spawn was reported Wednesday along the Bay Trail in Burlingame, centered around “Fisherman’s Park.” The spawn events were both small but a good sign that fish are in the bay and we can expect more to come very soon. Please check back often to get updates or contact CDFW staff to report spawning herring around the bay.
