Brooks Island, San Francisco Bay -CDFW

Herring made another appearance this weekend just in time to ring in the new year. Activity was first reported at Point Richmond at the end of last week. Herring spawn was confirmed in the area south of the harbor channel entrance (rock jetty) on Saturday and today.  Spawning is all subtidal on eelgrass (Zostera marina). Numerous species of birds and marine mammals were feeding in the area between Brooks Island and the rock jetty. Staff will continue to monitor this spawn since there appears to be a large school along the South Hampton Shoal.

Herring Update and January FMP Meetings

It was quiet around San Francisco Bay this week. Various reports were received and investigated but no new herring spawn was found.

A small herring school was metered off the Sausalito shelf  and channel over the last week. A handful of fish were caught in the area by our research collaborative. Unfortunately, not enough to reliable provide information on fish condition or predict an incoming spawn event.

In other news, two Pacific herring fishery related meetings are scheduled for January.

Commercial Fishery Town Hall Meeting – January 6, 2018 – Sausalito City Hall -1:00pm-4:00pm – (information was sent to all commercial herring permit holders) For additional information please contact: Ryan.Bartling@wildlife.ca.gov

Pacific Herring Fishery Management Plan Informational Meeting – January 20, 2018 Sausalito – Bay Model Visitors Center – 12:00pm to 3:00pm – (watch for a separate post next week)

over the last few days. Department staff have been busy conducting spawn and trawl surveys since early November but these are the first confirmed signs of herring this season. One at Bellena Bay in Alameda and one at Point Richmond along the outer rock jetty.

Staff have also been busy with dive operations collecting subtidal vegetation data for use in calculating spawn estimates. This work is completed annually by the Department’s scientific diving team and important for producing population estimates for the fishery.
